Quick Tilapia Fish Fry

In the heart of the Southern kitchen, simplicity and flavor come together to create dishes that are both comforting and satisfying. One of my favorites is Southern Style Tilapia Fish Fry. Perfect for a quick weeknight meal or a leisurely weekend gathering, this recipe captures the essence of Southern cooking with a crispy, flavorful finish.

Ingredients:

  • 4 tilapia fillets
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions:

  1. In a shallow dish, combine cornmeal, flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
  2. Pour buttermilk into another shallow dish.
  3. Dip each tilapia fillet into the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off.
  4. Coat the fillets in the cornmeal mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
  5. Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Fry the fillets in batches, about 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Serve hot with lemon wedges for a zesty finish. Enjoy the Southern charm with every bite!
